Donor Profile: In a Class by Herself
In 2006, with Katrina still burning fresh in America’s mind, a retired teacher named Elyce* led with her heart and made a donation of $50,000 to the Angel Network.
A self-described “technophobe,” Elyce’s life-long friends Brenda and Ann helped craft an e-mail notifying the Angel Network of her intention to make the donation. The donation was made in loving memory of Elyce’s husband, John, and Ann’s daughter, Jodi.
John was in his 50s when he succumbed to multiple sclerosis and Jodi was just 27 years old when she succumbed to Rett’s Syndrome, a degenerative neuromuscular syndrome affecting only girls.
The donation went towards building Douglas Park in Dothan, Alabama, the place she was born, and where she spent her first year of life while her father served at the nearby Fort Rucker military base.

“As long as children are happy playing at the new park then I’m happy,” says Elyce. “As long as they are having a good time—that’s my ultimate goal.”
The park was dedicated in May 2008, and whenever a child is swinging or sliding, they can always feel free to send a “thank you” Elyce’s way.
